End-of-life scenario for polystyrene

Hi all,

I am wondering which waste scenario others are using when using the EPD from SUndolitt for polystyrene? Incineration or recycling? Happy to share what we are doing, but would like to hear what others are doing first, as not to put any ideas in peoples’ head

As far as I understand, you have to use incineration og landfill scenarios for EPD’s, because you don’t know how the material will be handled at EoL. So you can only use the benefits of recycling, when you are recycling (in other words only in the products second life cycle). Otherwise, the benefits of recycling will be accounted for twice.

But correct me if I’m wrong

Hi Elisabeth,

As things stand today, EPS from construction will in most cases end up being incinerated, unless there is a specific agreement with the contractor to sort it for recycling.

Although there is an increasing focus on waste sorting and recycling, EPS is particularly challenging, as it needs to be clean and separated to be recyclable. In practice, we often see that EPS is either contaminated or handled with other plastic fractions.

In relation to A5 reporting, where waste is typically grouped into broader fractions such as “plastics,” EPS will therefore often end up in a mixed plastic stream that ultimately goes to incineration.

My immediate recommendation would therefore be to assume incineration as the default scenario and only apply recycling in cases where there is clear assurance that the EPS is properly sorted and handled for that purpose.

If there is any doubt about the waste treatment scenario, I would also recommend choosing the most conservative assumption.

Hope this makes sense - I would be very interested to hear how others are approaching this.

Best regards,
Lucas
